The body needs iodine but cannot produce it and must be ingested through diet or supplementation.
As a general rule, unless added during processing, there is little iodine in food - most of the world's source of iodine is found naturally in the ocean - especially seaweed.
The thyroid glands need iodine to make hormones. When the thyroid does not have enough iodine to do its job, feedback systems in the body cause the thyroid to work harder. This can cause an enlarged thyroid gland.
